Baroness Sarah Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP for London and justice spokeswoman for the European Liberal Democrat group in the European Parliament, has called on the government to make an immediate loan to the planespotters' families of the money they need for bail.
She said: "It is essential that these tourists get straight home now for Christmas after their five-week legal nightmare. The government could and should assist by cutting through the red tape and putting the money for a bail bond up front through our Athens embassy.
"Then the families can fundraise to pay it back later, without the anxiety of further delay in getting the money together before their loved ones are released from jail.
"If the bond is not in Kalamata tomorrow, they may still be in jail Thursday night. Surely Tony Blair does not want the EU summit to open on Friday on a sour note, if this is still unresolved?"
