Baroness Sarah Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP for London, is calling for a public debate on Europe's future immigration and asylum policies. Speaking from a meeting of EU Parliamentarians in Stockholm she said:
"We must maintain Europe's proud tradition of welcoming victims of persecution and our absolute respect for the UN Refugee Convention. But the politicians must involve the public in solving the problem of an asylum system that is struggling to cope.
"Let's also explain that only co-operation across Europe will succeed in smashing the evil gangs of people-smugglers like those who let 58 Chinese immigrants die in Dover last year."
"We must ensure that each EU state takes its fair share of responsibility for processing asylum requests. France for example must process the asylum applications of the 900 shipwrecked Iraqi kurds, and not just pass on the responsibility."
