London's Liberal Democrat Euro-MP, Baroness Sarah Ludford, speaking from an asylum policy meeting of EU Parliamentarians in Stockholm, has called for an EU "humanitarian rapid reaction force" to be on permanent standby.
She said: "We should learn from the Kosovo experience, where our response to one million refugees was slow and muddled; and invest in a well-equipped team backed by military support that can be 'ready-to-go' at all times both for natural disasters like earthquakes, and for conflict situations".
Sarah Ludford added:
"Not only would this be the best response on humanitarian grounds, minimising trauma, but it might mean that more refugees could stay in a neighbouring country for a short time and then go home instead of having to be transported to Europe".
