The proposed public transport link running across west London from Uxbridge in the west to Shepherd's Bush on the edge of central London is being backed by London's Liberal Democrat Euro-MP Baroness Sarah Ludford.
Transport for London, which controls public transport in the capital, is to consult residents in the boroughs of Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, and Hillingdon about whether they want the so-called 'West London Transit' scheme and whether they would like a 'bendy' bus, a trolleybus, or a tram.
MEP Sarah Ludford said:
"Compared to other cities in Europe, London's public transport infrastructure is just not up to scratch. As well as investing more, we need to innovate and a tram running across west London would be an excellent step on that direction.
"I very much hope that residents in Ealing, Hammersmith & Fulham, and Hillingdon wholeheartedly back this proposal when they are consulted by Transport for London."
The consultation exercise and the analysis of its results will run until the New Year when a decision will be taken as to whether and how to take the proposed scheme forward. The link could be built and carrying passengers by 2007.
