The European Parliament has today passed a resolution which calls for a future Afghan government to respect women's rights and include them fully in re-building Afghanistan.
The Parliament accepted a proposal from Baroness Sarah Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP for London, to group several amendments on Afghanistan so as to result in a call for the establishment of a 'stable, legitimate and broad-coalition government which adequately represents women, respects their human rights and ensures that Afghan women participate fully in building [their] future'.
Baroness Ludford, in applauding the outcome, said:
"I am delighted the European Parliament has overwhelmingly endorsed a demand for a future Afghan government to guarantee the rights of women. It would be a scandal if a post-war settlement there ignored the biggest single group which has suffered at the hands of the Taliban.
"I hope government leaders will now take their lead from us and stop their dangerous talk of including the 'moderate Taliban' - a contradiction in terms - in a future government for Afghanistan."
