Baroness Sarah Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP for London, has welcomed the European Parliament's vote to end subsidies for exports of live cattle.
"I am delighted that the European Parliament has supported an amendment backed by the Eurogroup for Animal Welfare [see Notes to Editors below] to end these so-called 'export refunds'. This should end the scandal of European taxpayers subsidising the trade whereby 300,000 live cattle are exported annually in often cruel conditions to the Middle East and Africa."
Sarah Ludford, who last week attended an 'international day' in London organised by Compassion in World Farming, will shortly be meeting with CIWF's legal director Peter Stevenson to help rally support for the forthcoming report by MEP Albert Maat. This report calls for a maximum eight-hour transport time or 500km in distance and for EU policy changes to promote local slaughter in order to avoid live exports. It is hoped that this will be adopted by the full Parliament in a few week's time.
Says Sarah: "The European Parliament is now pursuing a serious strategy to deter live exports, through ending subsidies, limiting journey times and promoting small local abattoirs. This makes good business sense as well as ending unacceptable bad practices."
