London lottery award black holes must get fair share

November 6, 2001 12:00 AM

London neighbourhoods dominate a league table of National Lottery award losers, says London's Liberal Democrat MEP, Baroness Sarah Ludford.

London parliamentary constituencies fill 10 of the bottom 25 slots in a league table measuring the number of lottery awards given to projects in each of the UK's 659 parliamentary constituencies, compiled by the politically-independent House of Commons Library.

Bottom of the heap is Hayes and Harlington, which has been awarded only 21 by the end of June 2001, the period covered in the study. Other constituencies include Ruislip-Northwood (34 awards), Uxbridge (36), Hornchurch (38), Bexleyheath and Crayford (38), Ilford North (39), Upminster (40), Eltham (40), Enfield Southgate (42), and Brent North (43).

The MEP said:

"London constituencies dominate the bottom slots of this league table and that is just not on. Many constituencies - admittedly, some in London - have won hundreds of awards and yet Hayes and Harlington has secured only 21!"
