Baroness Sarah Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP for London, has criticised the passivity of the European Commission regarding the lack of political settlement in Cyprus.
Sarah Ludford said:
"One can read the Commission's 2001 accession progress report and find no awareness of the division of Cyprus. I find this surreal.
"It makes no sense for the Commission to ignore the practical reality that an administration exists in the North, led by Raul Denktash. Mr Prodi's recent trip to the island when he declined to visit the North is part of a bigger problem, a pretence that it does not exist. This must stop.
"The Commission must instead take a pro-active role in using the Cyprus accession process to promote political dialogue between North and South."
