Londoners are substantially more open than the rest of the UK to Britain adopting the euro, according to a new survey conducted by FX Currency Services.
Across the UK as a whole, 21% want Britain to join the single currency and 57% are opposed, a balance of 36% against. However 25% of Londoners are in favour with 44% against, a much lower balance of 19% against.
London Liberal Democrat MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford commented: "Although people are still, on balance, against joining the euro, Londoners are substantially more favourable than the UK as a whole, which is undoubtedly because we are more cosmopolitan than the rest of the country."
She continued: "I believe that a 'yes' vote can be won in a euro referendum. When everyone has a chance to hear all the arguments and examine all the facts, doubt about the euro can be transformed into support, just as opposition to our membership of the Common Market turned into a two-thirds 'yes' majority back in the 1975 referendum."
