The British planespotters convicted of spying in Greece, meeting Foreign Secretary Jack Straw MP this afternoon with their MPs and MEPs, have urged him to make strong representations to the Greek government to ensure they get a fair hearing for an appeal.
Afterwards, Lib Dem MEP for London Baroness Sarah Ludford said:
"It was good the Foreign Secretary took time to have this meeting, and he seemed personally committed to getting justice for them."
"But I do feel he has to overcome an inhibition about involvement in the legal system of another EU Member State. There cannot be genuine European integration without fair trial standards everywhere. Therefore he must be a bit more ambitious in his aims."
