Liberal Democrat Euro-MP for London, Baroness Sarah Ludford, has slammed government dithering which has resulted in mountains of dumped fridges and abandoned cars.
The government failed to prepare for the coming into force of a number of EU recycling Directives they signed up to, and have not provided either the treatment facilities and funding for disposal.
She said: "Here is a good news story from Europe, about cutting waste and pollution. But incompetence by ministers means facilities are not yet available and no UK plan is in place for meeting the costs. Thanks to this Labour government, boroughs have had to pick up the mess - and the tab."
Sarah Ludford is calling on ministers to cough up more funds for London local Councils, which are especially hard hit, so local residents do not have to face a rise in the Council tax this year.
