Reacting to the decision of the European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee to seek part-annulment in the European Court of Justice of the Family Reunification Directive because of breach of the European Convention on Human Rights, Liberal Democrat European justice spokeswoman Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP said:
"Our justice & home affairs committee warned EU governments that their mean and restrictive attitude would conflict with human rights standards on respect for family life. I hope they get condemned by the European Court."
"Today in a European Parliament debate the Italian minister representing the Council Presidency said 'the EU will not fail to give a welcome to legal immigrants'. This is rank hypocrisy considering EU governments have also said in the law they passed 'as long as you leave half your family behind.'"
