London's Liberal Democrat Euro-MP, Baroness Sarah Ludford today strongly welcomed the provisional release of Simon Chapman and the other hunger strikers who were arrested and detained following protests at the Thessaloniki EU summit last June.
Sarah said:
"I am sure the Greek authorities are right to focus now on the Supreme Court Prosecutor's investigation into the soundness of the charges laid against Simon and the behaviour of the police that day."
"I thank the Minister of Justice for finally responding to the serious concerns about the integrity of the arrest of Simon and the rest of the 'Thessaloniki Seven' that I and other Euro-MPs raised along with many others such as Fair Trials Abroad."
"If there are any valid charges against any demonstrators, they must be properly examined, but any based on falsification of evidence must of course be dismissed and culpable police disciplined."
