Palestinian Prime Minister Abu Ala & Sarah Ludford, April 2002
Sarah Ludford met the new Palestinian Prime Minister Abu Ala (then speaker of the Parliament) in April 2002 when she went on a European Parliament fact-finding mission.
She said today:
"I most sincerely wish him well. His - like that of Ariel Sharon - is one of the most challenging roles in international politics, tasked with advancing the peace process towards a two-state solution. Abu Ala has to tackle terrorism while offering hope through better conditions for the Palestinian people and the prospect of self-rule for Palestine in a viable state."
"We know from our history in Europe all about hatred and intolerance, and the foundations for overcoming them. The European Union has a major role to play both in diplomatic support for the peace process and in contributing through trade with Israel and financial assistance for the Palestinian authority to economic improvements."
