On the second anniversary of 9/11, European Liberal Democrat justice spokeswoman Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP says the memory of the victims should be honoured through a definition of security that is inclusive rather than divisive.
"The best longterm protection against alienation and violence is the rule of law and respect for diversity. Detention without charge in Guantanamo Bay, refusal of fair trials and discrimination against Muslims is the wrong basis for real security."
"Measures of surveillance and intrusion of privacy should only be introduced after democratic debate. This is not happening at European level, with data protection rules bypassed and 'terrorist profiling' being pursued."
"In the UK, anti-terrorism measures are being hijacked in order to prevent Legitimate protest - such as against the Iraq war and currently against the arms fair in London. Effective policing is vital, but repressive measures are counter-productive if they lead to disaffected people."
