The European Liberal Democrat Group has agreed to nominate posthumously Sergio Vieira de Mello for the European Parliament's Sakharov Prize for Freedom.
Sarah Ludford MEP said:
"In a year when the United Nations' efforts for international peace and human rights have been threatened more than ever before, the Liberal Group thinks it is fitting for the European Parliament to honour posthumously the memory of an outstanding international public servant, Sergio Vieira de Mello."
"We hope through this award, which is rapidly gaining consensus within the European Parliament, to pay tribute also to all the other victims of the terrorist attack on the UN in Baghdad and to all the staff of the United Nations who work tirelessly in often dangerous and difficult conditions."
Previous winners of this annual prize, named in honour of Soviet human rights campaigner Andrei Sakharov, include José Xanana Gusmão of East Timor.
