Air passengers who become victims of overbooking by airlines will receive increased cash compensation according to new legislation set to be approved by the European Parliament tomorrow.
The new rules will also mean that cash payouts will be provided to those facing flight cancellations. They have been strongly welcomed by Sarah Ludford MEP:
"This is a real step forward for air passenger rights. Flight cancellation, overbooking and delays are responsible for blighting thousands of holidays and trips each year. This legislation will mean that all airlines will have to face up to their responsibilities to their passengers and play by a single set of rules."
Compensation for flights of 1500 kms or less will be set at 250 euros (GBP174), with 400 euros (GBP277) due for flights between 1500 and 3500 kms, and 600 euros (GBP415) for longer flights to destinations outside the EU.
The new laws will also mean that those facing significant delays will have the right to meals, refreshment and accommodation while they wait, as well as the reimbursement of ticket costs.
"These rules should make airlines think twice before overbooking or canceling flights for commercial reasons. Fewer passengers will be "bumped" off the flights that they booked and those facing the inconvenience and distress of long delays will receive the care and attention they deserve from their airlines, whatever the cost of their tickets."
