Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP is repeating her call to Tony Blair to raise Nick Baker's plight with the Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi at the G8 summit in Evian, France next week.
She said:
"We are being told by Number 10 that 'they are not aware of any bilaterals' with Koizumi. This is frankly not good enough when we have a race against time. I have no patience with such bureaucratic nonsense. If Blair cares enough about averting the possibility that Nick Baker will be sentenced to 15 years for a crime he did not commit he will create an opportunity to raise it with Koizumi.
"If he does not create an opportunity to raise this with Koizumi we will have to conclude that he does not care enough to save a British citizen from Human Rights abuses. In that case 'Shame on him'".
Nick Baker has been detained in prison in Japan for over a year on drug smuggling charges. Verdict and sentence are due on 12th June. He alleges he was duped by his travelling companion.
Sarah Ludford and Fair Trials Abroad maintain that Nick Baker has not had a fair trial and that crucial evidence relating to similar trickery by his companion in Belgium and elsewhere has been ignored.
