Some light in Cyprus?

April 23, 2003 12:00 AM

Sarah Ludford, LibDem Euro-MP for London has welcomed the constructive initiatives on free movement announced by both Turkish and Greek Cypriots recently, though she regrets some accompanying unhelpful rhetoric. She said:

"Steps such as the these will go some way to build confidence whilst easing the economic imbalance between the two communities. However, the big issue of a divided Cyprus joining the EU cannot be dodged under a carpet of small measures, however welcome these are."

The Greek Cypriot government has announced a series of proposals to allow trade across the Green Line and to enable Turkish Cypriots to work in the south, while Mr Denktash has proposed facilitating free movement of people including tourists and bilateral reconciliation contacts.

Sarah Ludford added: "It is a pity that there always seems to be a sting in the tail. Mr Denktash continues to insist on recognition of the independent 'Turkish Republic of North Cyprus' which is a complete obstacle to acceptance of the Annan power-sharing plan. Meanwhile Greek Prime Minister Simitis unhelpfully uses the term 'Enosis' to describe Cyprus' entry to the EU.'

"Leaders on both sides must make an effort to represent the best interests of their peoples, which is for a united island inside the EU, where we are constructing a future for our 450 million people in which sovereignity is shared in a framework of fundamental rights guarantees."

"The EU must now assist the UN Secretary-General by taking a more active role in the search for a political solution in Cyprus. If the EU is to play a significant role on the world stage we must be able to ensure peace in our own borders, our core purpose. If we cannot secure that, then what chance do we have further afield?"
