Important "e-safety" legislation which will help to protect children and promote safer use of the internet has been voted through the European Parliament by an overwhelming majority.
London's LibDem Euro-MP Sarah Ludford, spokeswoman on justice and home affairs for the Liberal group, strongly welcomed the vote:
"This is excellent news for internet users and for parents since the legislation will help combat internet abuse such as porn, paedophile activities and race-hate material".
"The worldwide nature of the internet means that action to prevent abuse must be taken at an international level, so EU legislation is timely."
"It will bring practical benefits such as a network of helplines to report suspicious content [in the UK, at www.iwf.org.uk], filtering and rating systems to allow people control of what they and their children see, and information brochures and CD-Roms for schools."
