Important "e-safety" measures that will help to protect children and stop illegal and harmful internet content were approved by the European Parliament's Civil Liberties committee today.
Baroness Sarah Ludford, MEP for London and Liberal Group spokeswoman on justice and home affairs in the European Parliament strongly welcomed the vote:
"This plan, spearheaded by the Liberal Group in the Parliament, is excellent news for internet users as it will combat abuse in the form of child pornography, paedophile activities and race-hate material."
"It will bring practical benefits such as a network of helplines to report suspicious content [in the UK, at www.iwf.org.uk], filtering and rating systems to allow people control of what they and their children see, and information brochures and CD-Roms for schools."
"Given that the internet itself is world-wide, it makes good sense for the EU to ensure protective action at European level but also cooperate internationally."
