London's Liberal Democrat member of the European parliament Baroness Sarah Ludford supported the peace cause in Cyprus last Sunday. She attended, with her LibDem colleague and Islington Council Executive member Meral Ece, the rally organised by the 'Peace Platform' of London Cypriot organisations at Alexandra Palace.
Hundreds of people heard speakers including Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce President Ali Erel and Republican Turkish party (CTP) leader Mehmet Ali Talat call for negotiations on the basis of the Annan peace plan. Said Sarah, who met both leaders when she visited the island 18 months ago:
"On the eve of Kofi Annan's visit to Cyprus, they talked a lot of sense. I firmly support moves to bring Turkish Cypriots fully into the EU at the same time as Greek Cypriots on the basis of a Cyprus peace settlement rooted in political equality and respect for the different communities. These are EU values, and inside the EU the rights of all people will be guaranteed."
"It is surely no accident that the chamber of commerce president is such a tireless advocate of peace. He knows that EU membership will mean jobs and prosperity, giving an outlet for the huge talents of Cypriots in the north so they can catch up with the south."
