Ahead of an impending appeal submission Nick Baker's Japanese lawyer has travelled to Brussels and London in pursuit of previously blocked evidence to support Nick Baker's pleas of innocence. British citizen Nick Baker was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment and fined £25,000 in June last year having been convicted for drug smuggling. Liberal Democrat MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford and Sabine Zanker from Fair Trials Abroad travelled to Japan in May to press for a fair trial.
At 13:00 on Friday 9 January Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP will be co-hosting a press conference with Sabine Zanker from Fair Trials Abroad, Iris Baker and Shunji Miyake, Nick Baker's lawyer at the UK Office of the European Parliament, 2 Queen Anne's Gate, London, SW1H 9AA.
Nick Baker's lawyer will be present having travelled from Chiba in Japan, to Brussels and London, in preparation for submitting grounds concerning Nick's appeal which are due on 20 January. An appeal hearing is anticipated later on this year.
Mr Miyake travelled to Brussels on 4 January 2004, to then be joined by Iris Baker on a fact finding mission in the hope of obtaining evidence concerning the past activities of Mr Baker's travel companion which the Japanese authorities in the original trial would not allow to be admitted. It is alleged that subsequent to the events in Tokyo for which Nick Baker was arrested Mr Baker's travel companion tricked others in Belgium to smuggle drugs on his behalf. It is hoped this crucial evidence will be heard in court for Mr Baker's appeal and prove his long held claims of innocence. Mr Miyake returns to Japan on Sunday 12 January.
Whilst in Brussels Mr Miyake hopes to speak with the Belgian Police and the Belgian Public Prosecutor before returning to London to meet Baroness Ludford MEP and Fair Trials Abroad before co-hosting this press conference.
