Lib Dem Mayoral Candidate and London Spokesperson Simon Hughes MP was on Friday 23rd January joined by Camden's Lib Dem Euro MP, Baroness Sarah Ludford at the launch of Camden Market's alternative proposals for the redevelopment of Camden Town Tube Station.
The proposals were publicly exhibited by Camden Market from 23rd to 24th January in the Camden Lock Holiday Inn, Jamestown Road, Camden.
Of the alternative proposals Sarah Ludford said:
"I am extremely encouraged that Henry Lennard and his colleagues have taken this imaginative step of developing alternative credible proposals for the refurbishment of Camden Town Tube Station which challenge the grandiose overdevelopment put forward by LUL.
The fact that Camden Market proposals are advised by Arup gives them a strong technical credibility and they meet the key objectives for the character of the area which is to safeguard the market itself, the United Reform Church and a future for the Electric Ballroom."
Simon Hughes said:
"I am in full support of Arup's alternative proposals for the redevelopment of Camden Tube Station. It is vital that the redevelopment of Camden Tube station does not detract from this vibrant and culturally exciting part of London. These proposals will not disrupt the running of the tube through Camden town and will not destroy the old tube station building and will ensure that the very important trinity of Camden Market, the Electric Ballroom and the United Reform church have a guaranteed and successful future. Common sense dictates that this is the way forward. Between now and June I will seek to persuade LUL to agree these new plans and from the beginning of July I hope I will be able to insist they do."
