Victory in Haringey part of LibDem winning way!

January 30, 2004 12:00 AM

Sarah Ludford and Haringey Liberal Democrat Councillor Laura EdgeLondon's Euro-MP Baroness Sarah Ludford welcomed new Haringey Liberal Democrat councillor Laura Edge to the growing ranks of Liberal Democrat councillors in London.

"Laura's sweeping victory makes her the 310th LibDem councillor in London, in the sixth council seat gained in the past 12 months. This string of by-election successes, in addition of course to the Parliamentary success in Brent East with the election of Sarah Teather MP, shows that the Liberal Democrats are increasingly proving to be the effective alternative to a discredited New Labour administration."

The full result in the Stroud Green by-election was:

Laura Edge, LibDem: 1135, 53.7% (up 37.9%)

Labour: 408, 19.3% (down 20.9%)

Green: 403, 19.1% (down 8.8%)

Tory: 166, 7.9% (up 1.1%)

LibDem gain from Labour, swing 29.4%

This swing would give Liberal Democrats all the seats in Haringey at the next council election, and would see Liberal Democrats win the Hornsey and Wood Green Parliamentary seat (PPC: Lynne Featherstone) with a majority of 15,722.
