Blair government bows to pressure over EU immigration

Baroness Sarah Ludford, London MEP and European justice spokeswoman for the Liberal Democrats has condemned the Government's knee-jerk reaction to tabloid pressure over immigration and EU Enlargement.
Speaking after David Blunkett's announcement today on EU accession nationals she said:
"The Blair government has blinked like a rabbit in the headlights of the tabloid press. They are helping create hysteria about EU Enlargement which was once greeted with such acclaim. David Blunkett needs to ensure that he does not breach EU law by treating say Italians differently from Poles."
"The new 'worker registration scheme' is yet another of the many back door routes that Blunkett is seeking for a national ID card scheme applying to all British people as well as foreigners."
