Sarah Ludford with President Papadopoulos and European Liberal Democrat colleagues during a visit of a European Parliament delegation to Cyprus in March 2004
London's Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament, Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP, had the privilege of meeting President Tassos Papadopoulos when he opened the 'Colours of Medieval Cyprus' exhibition at the Hellenic centre in Marylebone on May 2nd.
She said "This splendid exhibition shows the richness of the historical and artistic heritage Cyprus brings to the European Union. The legitimate pride that Cypriots have both in their distinct identity as well as their new European role totally disproves the Euro-sceptic idea that the EU crushes individual country identities."
"There were some modern echoes in the exhibition. One 14th century commentator referred to the variety of nationalities and languages spoken on the island - clearly Cyprus always had a European vocation!"
