The European Parliament today voted to support an EU Fundamental Rights Agency that could begin work in 2007.
Baroness Sarah Ludford, London MEP and European spokeswoman for the Liberal Democrats said:
"The European Parliament has demonstrated its belief that the proposed EU Fundamental Rights Agency is an absolute must for ensuring observance of fundamental rights across the EU, such as the right to freedom of expression and the right to a fair trial.
It is essential that such an Agency is more than a talking shop, but has real clout to make sure that both the EU and Member States live up to their commitments on human rights and civil liberties."
