On the eve of the second anniversary of the terrorist bombings in Madrid on March 11th 2004, the European Parliament welcomed school children from around Europe to a ceremony commemorating the victims of terrorism including the London July 7th 2005 bombs.
They included 25 young people from South Camden community school London, which was caught up in the events of July 7th by being close to the scene.
London's Liberal Democrat MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford, speaking at the event, said:
"Today's event gives us the chance to remember the victims of the appalling attacks in Madrid two years ago and in London last summer. There was no excuse at all for those despicable attacks, as well as 9/11 and other attacks around the world."
"The presence of so many children from across the EU at today's ceremony is a poignant reminder of the need for full EU cooperation on anti-terrorism measures."
"Despite the horror, in the days that followed the London bombs I felt incredibly proud to be a Londoner. The people of London responded to atrocity with great courage and determination to carry on as usual, a stoicism rooted in a refusal to give in to fear. But they also showed determination not to let the terrorists win by dividing us from one another, a refusal to stereotype or scapegoat particular communities.
"Those who project hatred and commit violence can have no quarter. But if governments break the law, by kidnapping, detention without trial or torture, they will only stir up a pool of resentment in which terrorists can fish."
"It is only by building security from the bottom up on the basis of social solidarity, mutual understanding and respect for difference that we can fight terrorism in a holistic way."
Note: Sarah Ludford is vice-chair of the European Parliament temporary committee investigating allegations of European governments' complicity in CIA 'torture flights' and secret jails.
