London's Liberal Democrat Euro-MP Baroness Sarah Ludford is celebrating the results of a poll which named Concorde the number 1 British design icon. The "Great British Design Quest," organised by the BBC and the Design Museum, asked British people to vote for their favourite example of British design since 1900. Sarah Ludford said:
"Concorde's victory in the design quest will give a huge boost to the campaign to return one aircraft to flight in a heritage role. If one aircraft were allowed to fly, then future generations would be able to share in a great piece of European history. It would be a great pity to consign Concorde to mere memory"
Concorde beat other internationally renowned British designs such as the E-Type jaguar, the Mini and the Spitfire to the top spot. Sarah Ludford added:
"Concorde's success tells the story of a great engineering feat achieved through Anglo-French cooperation. It is the international aspect to its history which makes it stand above the other items shortlisted."
