Don't forget your health card!

July 12, 2006 5:55 PM

London's Liberal Democrat MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford today reminded Londoners not to forget their health cards before going on holiday in Europe.

Most holidaymakers aren't aware that since January, the old E111 forms are no longer valid to access healthcare on holiday in Europe. The new European Health Insurance Card entitles all EU citizens to reduced-cost, sometimes free, medical treatment that becomes necessary while on holiday in Europe.

Sarah Ludford commented:

"This is a great example of the EU at its best - cutting through bureaucratic red tape and making a real difference for all of us."

"The health card even extends the provisions of the old E111 by providing not only emergency care, but also 'necessary care' - great news for people with chronic diseases or pre-existing illnesses."

"Even basic health care abroad can be expensive, so getting a health card for every family member going on holiday is a must. Valid for 3-5 years, it also means much less pre-holiday queueing!"

People can apply for the European Health Insurance Card online at the Department of Health website (www.dh.gov.uk/travellers ), by phone (0845 606 2030) or by post using forms available at the Post Office. The process is quickest online - 7 days compared to 3 weeks by post.
