Dear Sir,
A recent independent report (the Power Report) set out to discover why British people's interest in politics had declined to the point where 40% of Londoners did not even bother to vote at the last general election.
Its conclusions echo those that Liberal Democrats have been urging for many years: making every person's vote count, returning power to local communities, reforming the House of Lords so we have a second chamber of parliament where at least the majority is elected.
I hope your readers will join Liberal Democrats in pushing for decision-making to be more accountable. We must end the kind of arrogance which the present Blair government has in spades, despite having the support of only a minority of voters.
That arrogance has led this government to impose compulsory registration on the ID card database on anyone who takes out or renews a passport, despite their 2005 manifesto pledge that ID cards would be voluntary.
It is time to end elective dictatorship and get real democracy in this country.
Yours sincerely,
Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP
Liberal Democrat MEP for London
