Sarah takes to her bicycle!
London's Liberal Democrat MEP is pledging her support for a worldwide event highlighting climate change and urging Londoners to follow suit - wherever they happen to be.
Today at 6.55pm GMT (i.e UK time), millions of people across the globe will switch off their lights, computers, televisions and other appliances to observe a five minute 'electronic silence'. The aim of the event, on the eve of publication of the U.N.'s latest report on Climate Change, is to raise awareness among householders, politicians and the media about the energy wasted daily.
Sarah says:
"This is globalisation at its best. An idea which started as a French initiative by an environmental umbrella group, Alliance for the Planet, has with the help of the Internet spread across the world in a matter of days to become a truly international endeavour."
"This evening, I will switch off all the lights and computers in my office in Brussels for five minutes and urge others to do the same to show their support."
"The Mayor of Paris has even agreed to switch off the lights of the Eiffel Tower. I look forward to hearing what Ken's contribution is after his bizarre climate-destroying flight to Cuba in a thwarted bid to beg Venezuela's Hugo Chavez for cheap oil!"
