Europe unveils plans for cross border health care

The European Commission has today unveiled a proposal for an EU directive on cross border health care. The proposal would facilitate and regulate a practice already undertaken by many UK citizens, of going abroad for treatment.
Sarah Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP for London, commented:
"It is good news that there will at last be a proper framework for British and other EU citizens to choose medical treatment in another EU country without being financially penalised."
"In an ideal world the NHS would always deliver high quality medical care promptly and efficiently for British people. Unfortunately despite extra billions of our tax money, this is still not guaranteed under Labour."
"At least the EU proposal will ensure that UK citizens will not be forced to pay the price for NHS deficiencies. In an integrated Europe, cross-border health services make sense."
