Liberal Democrat European justice & human rights spokeswoman and London MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford has given her support to a European Parliament declaration on taking young people into account in setting policies, which has now received enough signatures to be formally adopted by MEPs in the first plenary session in September. This means that the other EU bodies, the Commission and Council, will be expected to take action.
The declaration calls for the impact on young people and the outcome of dialogue with youth organizations to be considered in any proposed new EU laws.
Sarah Ludford said:
"It is vital that the impact on young people is always considered when proposing legislation if we expect them to be engaged and involved in public issues. I hope that MEPs' support for the declaration will lead to serious attention being paid to youth interests and will encourage young people across Europe's 27 member states to become more interested in EU matters."
