MEPs have endorsed proposals for reform in airline computerised reservation systems such as Amadeus and Sabre used by high-street and online travel agents.
The changes would boost competition, protect personal data and ensure travellers get a fair deal and are presented with environmentally friendly travel options such as train travel as an alternative to flights shorter than 90 minutes.
London Liberal Democrat MEP Sarah Ludford said:
"In a context of economic woes and global warming, both the consumer and the environment are rightly at the top of EU priorities. These proposals will save customers money if they must fly, as reservation systems compete on both price and quality."
"But the new rules on prominent display of train alternatives to short flights and supply of easily understandable information about CO2 emissions and fuel consumption will also help consumers make greener travel choices."
