MEPs call for urgent abolition of cluster bombs

November 21, 2008 4:05 PM

MEPs have called on EU states to ensure swift ratification and implementation of the Convention on Cluster Bombs adopted in May this year. It opens for signature in December and will come into force once 30 ratifications have been obtained.

The convention bans the use, production, transfer and stockpiling of cluster bombs, which scatter over a wide area when dropped from the air or used in artillery shells and thus cause a lot of harm to civilians.

Liberal Democrat European justice and human rights spokeswoman Sarah Ludford MEP said:

"Cluster bombs are a very cruel form of weaponry. By their very nature they are indiscriminate in causing human suffering. Whilst the immediate threat they pose is terrifying for innocent bystanders, their legacy is even worse."

"Unexploded cluster bombs continue to spread fear and cause horrible injuries among war torn communities. The use of these bombs during the Georgia crisis in August highlights the need for urgent action across Europe and further afield."

"EU states must lead in implementation of the ban and increase financial assistance to communities still affected by cluster munitions. We must put an end to these horrible weapons once and for all."
