Sarah met with members of the West London Synagogue Pensioners Lunch Club, where she delivered a talk entitled 'Is freedom of speech an insult?'
Sarah said: "Meeting the members of the Lunch Club was a very interesting opportunity to discuss the topic of free speech, including when religious sensitivities are affected. My own view is that offending people by saying critical things about their religion should not fall foul of the law, while clearly all kinds of discrimination, intimidation or violence should. Indeed, I have strongly condemned the worryingly high number of anti-Semitic incidents. But at the same time as upholding the right to free speech, I would counsel that there is no need nor obligation to choose to go around being offensive! Many thanks to Hermy Jankel for organising the event, to the West London Synagogue for their hospitality, and to the lunch club members with whom I enjoyed a lively discussion after my talk."
