MEPs back better rights for bus, coach and ship passengers

The European Parliament has endorsed new laws which give bus, coach and ship passengers the same rights that air travellers already enjoy under EU laws.
MEPs call for information and compensation for delays as well as for accident or death. Individuals with a disability may not be refused access except where their safety would be endangered; they must also be given free assistance so long as it is requested at least 48 hours in advance.
Liberal Democrat MEP for London Sarah Ludford said:
"These new laws are welcome since there is no reason why bus, coach and ship passengers should have fewer rights than air passengers. It is particularly important against the backdrop of global warming that holidaymakers are encouraged to reduce flying in favour of greener, more environmentally friendly modes of transport."
"It is particularly important that those with disabilities are given the same rights as everyone else, which is an issue both of consumer rights and of non-discrimination. The new laws approved this week must be implemented quickly so that travellers can enjoy bus, coach and sea travel safe in the knowledge that they are protected should something go wrong."
