David Cameron's Tory MEPs showed their true colours by launching last minute attempts in the European Parliament to scupper the EU's strategy for the Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change of cutting carbon emissions and increasing climate change aid for developing countries.
Tory MEPs Daniel Hannan and Roger Helmer voted against call for the Copenhagen talks to agree an 80 per cent cut in emissions by 2050. They were among 18 members of the Tories' new breakaway European Conservatives and Reformists Group, including its Polish leader Michal Kaminski, to oppose such a deal .
Tory MEPs tabled amendments to remove the EU commitment to provide "new and additional" money for funding mitigation and adaptation measures for developing countries suffering from man-made climate change, and to strike out the Parliament's long-standing position that part of the money raised by the European Emissions Trading Scheme should be earmarked for developing countries' climate change needs. Both amendments were overwhelming defeated.
London Liberal Democrat MEP Sarah Ludford said:
"Tories are showing that their greenwash is hogwash. The shameful 'true blue' attitude of their MEPs in opposing real action to combat global warming or helping poor countries adapt torpedoes Cameron's attempt to create an eco-friendly Conservative image."
"The Tory mask has slipped, revealing that underneath they are still the nasty party. Their alliance in the European Parliament with right-wing extremists speaks volumes about their real priorities."
