Barroso's proposal unacceptable, says Sarah Ludford MEP

3.13.46pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 21st Oct 2004

Regarding the proposal by Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso to strip Rocco Buttiglione of the discrimination and civil liberties aspects of the justice portfolio and do those functions himself , Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP, European justice spokeswoman for the British Liberal Democrats commented:

"This is an inadequate and unacceptable non-solution. He would be enfeebled - 'castrato' as the Italians would say - instead of being the strong, single justice Commissioner we need, upholding the freedom as well as security aspects of the job."

"This splitting arrangement plus this vague idea of a working party would create hopeless complications."
